A Marine Survey is an impartial critical examination of a marine vessel to ascertain facts regarding its condition. The exact nature of the survey will determine what is to be inspected. Most frequently asked for, is a Condition & Valuation Survey, commissioned to satisfy a potential buyer of the Fair Market Value of the subject asset. The vessel's structure, its support systems, equipment and electronics are inspected and tested, the vessel is dry-docked and Sea Trials conducted.
Insurance Surveys may be as stringent, but depend on what the Insurers demands are.
Customs Valuation Surveys relate to the importation into the USA of foreign built vessels.
Valuation Surveys for the IRS are related to the donation of vessels to charitable causes, to enable the owner to gain a tax write off.
Marine Surveys should be conducted by experienced and competent inspectors who are licensed and insured.
Pre Purchase Survey
This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and overall operation of the vessel will be examined. Coverage includes safety, structural integrity, electrical systems, propulsion, fuel system machinery, pumps, plumbing, navigation equipment, rigging, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as an out-of-water inspection and sea trial.
Insurance Survey
This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessel's fair market value.
